Sirt1 improves inflammation by deacetylating the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) p65 subunit to inhibit the expression of inflammation-related genes such as intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), inducible NO synthase (iNOS), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) as well as pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in endothelial cells and monocytes/macrophages.
